Senate Panel Questions Starlink's Operations and Elon Musk’s Remarks

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology, led by Senator Palwasha Khan, has voiced concerns over Starlink's activities in Pakistan. The satellite internet provider, which submitted its registration application in February 2022, is still awaiting security clearance. The committee also criticized Elon Musk for his alleged anti-Pakistan remarks and called for a formal apology before considering Starlink's licensing.

The committee meeting highlighted the intricate challenges surrounding satellite internet services in the country. Discussions focused on Starlink’s pending application and the regulatory requirements under the National Space Policy 2023. Senators stressed the need to balance national security with improving internet access for the public. A detailed report from the Ministry of IT and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has been requested for further deliberation.

Additionally, questions were raised about the constitutional authority of the caretaker government to implement new policies related to satellite internet. Senator Anusha Rahman expressed doubts over the interim government's capacity to enforce decisions under the recently introduced regulatory framework.

As debates continue, the committee aims to address these unresolved issues and assess the viability of Starlink’s entry into the Pakistani market while safeguarding national interests.
